Quote from the mail Nalden sent out:

“Dutch entrepreneur Nalden aka Naldisney (Nalden.net / Appletree Records) presents HayZee (20) , one of the Netherlands finest talents, by releasing his first beat tape Next Level online as a free download. This young producer HayZee is certainly an upcoming talent and could be recognized by the influence of his passion for 8-bit games in the beats he produced. With games like Mario, Metroid, Megaman as inspiration HayZee started to make beats with this typical 8-bit sound a few years a go. Now, the loading is done and Next Level is his first beat tape containing 8 levels of crazy beats which gives you a pleasure listening for at least 30 minutes.
HayZee also invites every singer or mc to play with vocals of his beats. It would be much appreciated if we all can hear the result too so please e-mail us your Next Level tracks containing vocals and maybe we’ll end up with a limited but Next Level Compact Disc. “

Under the Scope: Akala

March 19, 2008 | 2 Comments

Up and Comer UK MC AkalaYou know what? I really regret not going down to SXSW. I have been checking out over 768 tracks from some of the showcasing artists (yeah, I don’t have a life). Anyway, one of the artists I came across was a British MC by name of Akala. The track called “Bit by Bit” blew my mind. Akala has been doing his thing for a while now. Check out his page at SXSW.

From Wikipedia

Akala (real name Kingslee Daley) is a British rap and grime artist. He is the brother of the singer Ms. Dynamite. His recent music has seen airplay on various radio stations and music channels including BBC Radio 1, Channel U TV, Choice FM, Kiss 100 and BBC 1Xtra. Despite the fact he considers himself black or Jamaican, and talks about issues in the black community, he has a Caucasian Scottish mother who raised him by herself after his father left. His name is a Buddhist term meaning “immovable”.

He released his first album, It’s Not a Rumour on May 1, 2006. In September 2006, he won a Mobo Award for best hip-hop artist. Controversy surrounded this award, as Akala beat chart-topping artists like 50 Cent and The Game.

I have to say the Brits are more experimental with their beats than us patriots (with exception of a few). I wonder why.

Urb’s Next 100: Midwest Representing!

March 5, 2008 | 1 Comment

I just got the latest issue of Urb Magazine. Couple of our friends are some of Urb Magazine’s Next 100 and the station we started Rhythm Lab Radio is in it too.

The GlamourCongratulations to our friends “The Glamour” hailing from Milwaukee. The duo has been rocking in Milwaukee for sometime now and I don’t see them stopping anytime soon.

“Comprised of neon-loving kids Ahser Gray and Richard Galling. The Glamour is Milwaukee’s answer to a hipster prayer. With a sound borrowing from French touch and sweaty Midwest loft parties, their signature tune “Kidz Night” made them every blogger’s wet dream. “It’s simple,” says Asher. “Our mantra is just, ‘let’s party!’” -Urb Magazine

Black Blondie

Another big congrats goes to Minneapolis’ Black Blondie. We have know those guys for a while. A band in a league on their own. Looking forward to hearing more from them.

“Black Blondie’s sassalicious frontwoman Samhara Linton’s look and sound resembles a drug- and beehive-free Amy Winehouse…if she had a hip-hop background, better lyrics and killer style. The Minneapolis foursome are together a shining example of the soul-filled creativity coming out of the Midwest. Withor without the beehives.” -Urb Magazine

currentFinally, big respects to one of our employers 89.3fm The Current for “keeping the Twin Cities on blast” Rhythm Lab Radio have been on The Current for almost three years and they have brought freshness to the airwaves in the Twin Cities. You can find Rhythm Lab Radio here and you can here it every Saturday at midnight following our man Kevin Beacham’s Redefinition Radio (one of the sickest hip shows in the country).

“Minneapolis-St. Paul might represent America’s 15th largest metro area, but their NPR station is first class. And it’s not just, “A Prairie Home Companion.” “The Current” proves that Minnesota Public Radio is totally modern, with free form sets music fans in bigger cities would die for. Fortunately, the web has made live in-studio sessions by Tori Amos, Art Brut and Ulrich available to everyone, making MPR a destination even for those not inclined to brave the brutal winters”.

Cumbia on Tour:Zizek Tour Live(Chicago)

March 3, 2008 | 1 Comment

zizek

The sound of Cumbia is catching on in dancefloors across the globe. I was first introduced to the sound a few years ago by my co-host DJ Don Cuco at one of our residencies in Minneapolis. Now the sound of Cumbia has infused with modern sounds by labels like Bersa Discos and artists like Villa Diamente and Diplo. This March the States will be invaded by the sound from a collective of artists from Argentina called Zizek. One of those artists is El Trip Selector who hit us up via email to let us know about the tour.

Zizek is named for a Slovenian philosopher (married to an Argentine lingerie model) whose mash-up philosophies include mixing elements of pop culture with Lacanian rhetoric and discourse to create something completely original and modern….Zizek is about emerging Hip Hop, Dancehall, Cumbia, and Reggaetón sounds and their respective variations: Grime, Crunk, Bastard Pop and Mashups. The idea is to give these styles, ideas and rhythms an Argentine touch, with the aim of putting Buenos Aires on the map of the global music scene. The star of Zizek has been Cumbia, a Latin American sound born from the fusion of old and new worlds in Colombia that has been long looked down on as dance music for the lower classes in Argentina. Its distinctly syncretic roots promote robust adaptability and cumbia is being transformed by avant-garde musicians and producers from the USA all the way down to Argentina. Diplo has become an avid supporter of the collective and the party has made fans of The Wire, DJ Rupture and The New York Times. XLR8R christened Zizek “the city’s unofficial cumbia clubhouse.”

Zizek plays host to live shows performed by local MCs, producers, composers and DJs and is bringing it’s collective to North America and SXSW this March. The Zizek tour allows us to witness the evolution of the hottest party in Argentina to full-fledged, multi-faceted movement.

These guys also do some dope podcasts.

El Trip Selector - “Cumbiancherita”

Tremor - “Viajante”

King Coya remix feat. PG13 & AxelK - “Petrona Martinez”

Here is information about the tour:

KING COYA & EL TRIP SELECTOR- Release on Nonesuch Records, collaborated with Oscar-winning film score composer Gustavo Santaolalla.
AXEL K SOUNDSYSTEM- Classically-trained multi-instrumentalist, one-man show incorporates elements from jazz, folklore, reggaetón and cumbia.
TREMOR- Film composer, takes traditional folkloric sounds of northern Argentina and adds glitchy percussive elements.
FRIKSTAILERS- The high-energy beats of Rafael Caivano and Lisandro Sona are meant strictly for the dancefloor.
EL REMOLÓN- El Remolón mixes local electronic music with Latin American sounds by using the latest technology available.
