SpacedOut!!!

Shame on you if you miss this past Saturday’s one year anniversary of SpacedOut at Moct presented by Rhythm Lab Radio. Diamonds, Jai Alai Savant, Blaqstarr and Diplo killed it. The place was packed and people were sweating. We even had multiple and simultaneous crowd surfing. That is how we do it in Milwaukee. You can see more pictures in our gallery. Big love to Sarah Fierek for taking great pictures.
The 1st Annual Milwaukee Air Guitar Showdown
December 19, 2007 | 3 Comments
Our Friend Peter is throwing the 1st Annual Milwaukee Air Guitar Showdown on December 21st at Stonefly Brewery. Entrance fee is $20. All entrants get an exclusive Milwaukee Air-Guitar Showdown t-shirt! Advanced registration is encouraged. Unleash your inner rock star for a chance to win cash prizes.
Each air-guitar contestant performs 60 seconds of his/her (women are encouraged to unleash their inner Lita Ford) favorite, rockin-est guitar jam. Each contestant is responsible for supplying cd with the song that he/she wants to perform, in advance. Just burn the song onto a CD and let us know which 60 second spot you wish to rock to! In advance, you ask, how will I get it to you? Easy. Contact us through myspace and we’ll meet you to pick it up. Or, you can call 414.517.6410 to coordinate pick-up.
JUDGING CRITERIA….YES, THERE WILL BE JUDGES
Criteria For Judging:
Technical Skill:
- You don’t have to be a professional guitar player, or even a musician to put on an excellent air-guitar performance. You just need to unleash the inner rock star. The judges will be looking for “technical skills”. So, if there’s some intricate fret work, your chances of bringing home the prestigous crown will increase. Get those fingers loose and ready for some Yngwie Malmsteen style solos!
Stage Persona and Presence:
-Alter ego’s and stage identities are very much encouraged. Consider a name that fits your personality as well as your style of play. The audience wants to see a show and it’s up to you to give them what they want. Do you have the ability to get the house rocking without a real instrument? If so, let us know.
Inner Rock Star:
-At which point does the performer forget that he/she is playing air guitar and gets lost in the act? When does he/she forget that it’s not a real guitar, but just an imaginary one? That is what we’re looking for. That’s not a real pick in your hand, it’s just your fingers pressed together. Everyone has a bit of an inner rock star in them, but the elite will be able to turn it on December 21st for 1 night in Riverwest. Will it be you?
Now we just need an air DJ competition?

We Rep Minneapolis
August 8, 2007 | 5 Comments

First of all, I want to apologize for not posting in a week. This past week has been crazy. The Bridge in Minneapolis had me worried for friends, then Don Cuco move to Brooklyn, and I am currently in the hospital for Crohn’s flare up. Which I have to say is not fun. I got the internet working using my phone and laptop (I know I am a geek) and I wanted to post something.
Myself and Don Cuco want to give are prayers to the families and victims of the I-35w Bridge collapse. The bridge had a lot of meaning to me. Besides I used to come and go to work and gigs on that bridge, but it brought a lot of memories for Minneapolis. Even though I live in Milwaukee and Don Cuco lives in Brooklyn we still do the show and have mad love for Minneapolis.
If it wasn’t for Minneapolis and the people I have gotten to know, I wouldn’t be doing a radio show and DJing, and found my passion for music over six years ago. I am quite thankful to DJ Jen from the Groove Garden on KFAI to give me my first opportunity to be on radio over 6 years ago. I give thanks to the Rhymesayers for showing love and support and allowing me to see some great shows and meet some great people and help out on their radio show as well. Also MPR and the Currrent for giving us an opportunity to do the Rhythm Lab(big ups to Steve and Derrick). I also want to thank Don Cuco especially for giving my first club gig so long ago. Minneapolis means a lot to me, and I glad to call it home.
For those interested there is I-35W Bridge fund. Just click here
There will be also be a benefit concert at the the fine line.
Love and Respect,
DJ Tarik, The Rhythm Lab

There is always time for Brazil

Brasilintime is the follow up to the documentary Keepintime.
From the Brasilintime Myspace Page:
Earl Palmer is the drummer on Dirty Old Bossa Nova by Howard Roberts as sampled by A Tribe Called Quest. Often what you stumble upon is better than what you’re looking for… Sao Paulo… the progressive face of our underdevelopement In September 2002 Coleman and B+ went to Sao Paulo for nine days. They had a week to link with (hip hop) Brasil, enlist three drummers and find enough breaks to make a break record to guarantee commitment from our oversubscribed DJs back home. A record hadn’t been custom pressed to make a film since Wildstyle Is it possible that hiphop didn’t start in the US or Jamaica after all but in the challenge singing (cocos and emboladas) brought to the Brasilian NorthEast by the Africans from Angola and the Arab influenced Portuguese… How do you remember what cant be remembered… How do you rememeber thirst as Chris Marker asks… hiphop somehow does this…. In the Northeast (of Brasil), rhythm is God dehydrated… Paulinha Da Costa the Brasilian percussionist gave Michael Jackson “Mama se, mama sa, mama makossa†for “Don’t Stop Until you get Enough†the phrase was originally written and recorded by Manu Dibango. The Brasilian is always waiting for something good to happen… Joao Parahyba ‘s “Comanche†– the song named for him by Jorge Ben was interpolated by the Black Eyed Peas for “Fallin Up†Music is a dialectical memory game, it is history with a heart beat…
There will be a Los Angeles Premiere Week, July 17-20 which will include a screening a live performance. Our friend over at Analog Giant has some tickets to the event to give away.
Afropunk: I wish I was in New York
June 28, 2007 | 1 Comment
Alright, who is going to buy me plane ticket to come out to New York between now and July 7? This festival is amazing. Organized by the director of the documentary AfroPunk, James Spooner, it is in it 3rd year. If you haven’t seen this documentary, you really need to. Because we don’t play punk or rock on our show, doesn’t mean we don’t love it.
The lineup is crazy. Bands like The Objex, CX Kidtronix, Philmoore Browne, Stephannie Mckay, Suffrajett, Taylor McFerrin, Rich Medina, and Tiombe Lockhart plus plenty more. A very diverse line-up. Check out Sound Verite for more information about the artists and festival in detail.
Also premiering is the new film from James Spooner called White Lies,Black Sheep plus many other cool flicks.
