Our close friend and LabSpace contributor Sarah White has join forces with fellow Trace Magazine writer Lichiban to start a new blog called Wrong Lips. It is a blog where they hunt for cool things in fashion, design, art and music. So show them some love and check it out. Below is a little bio of the two renaissance women.

wrong lips are Sarah White (singer/emcee, stylist, photographer, writer, TRACE blogger, Brooklyn ma) & Lichiban (visual artist, curator, activist, TRACE blogger, missing link/Brooklyn-Budapest connection). inspired by one of Sarah’s yet unreleased tracks, wrong lips was born out a desire to channel our creative energy freely into an independent outlet and to highlight issues, artists, musicians, events and phenomena we get exited about on a daily. this is our space to provoke, inspire, support, educate, share and shine. it’s all love. Sorry It has been a while since I updated. I have been working on the redesign of the blog. If anyone is interested in being a guest blogger, please email me at rhythmlab@mpr.org. Later today I will post a Lab Update with this past week’s playlist. In the meantime, enjoy this video from Jay Smooth of the Ill Doctrine talking about the Death of Hip Hop (again).

We Rep Minneapolis

Minneapolis

First of all, I want to apologize for not posting in a week. This past week has been crazy. The Bridge in Minneapolis had me worried for friends, then Don Cuco move to Brooklyn, and I am currently in the hospital for Crohn’s flare up. Which I have to say is not fun. I got the internet working using my phone and laptop (I know I am a geek) and I wanted to post something.

Myself and Don Cuco want to give are prayers to the families and victims of the I-35w Bridge collapse. The bridge had a lot of meaning to me. Besides I used to come and go to work and gigs on that bridge, but it brought a lot of memories for Minneapolis. Even though I live in Milwaukee and Don Cuco lives in Brooklyn we still do the show and have mad love for Minneapolis.

If it wasn’t for Minneapolis and the people I have gotten to know, I wouldn’t be doing a radio show and DJing, and found my passion for music over six years ago. I am quite thankful to DJ Jen from the Groove Garden on KFAI to give me my first opportunity to be on radio over 6 years ago. I give thanks to the Rhymesayers for showing love and support and allowing me to see some great shows and meet some great people and help out on their radio show as well. Also MPR and the Currrent for giving us an opportunity to do the Rhythm Lab(big ups to Steve and Derrick). I also want to thank Don Cuco especially for giving my first club gig so long ago. Minneapolis means a lot to me, and I glad to call it home.

For those interested there is I-35W Bridge fund. Just click here

There will be also be a benefit concert at the the fine line.

Love and Respect,
DJ Tarik, The Rhythm Lab

Ill Doctrine

I just found out about ill doctrine: the first hip hop video blog. The blog is created by Jay Smooth founder of hiphopmusic.com and who hosts a radio show on New York’s WBAI called Underground Railground. He also worked on this cool project called StoryCorps Griot(StoryCorps Griot is a one-year initiative, funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, to collect interviews from at least 1,750 African Americans.) It is pretty insightful and entertaining. Give him a look and show your support.
