Baltimore Club 2.0

May 31, 2007

The Baltimore Club scene is taking off nationally and internationally. Remixes are everywhere. I have to admit it having lived in the DC/MD/VA area for a few years, it is nice to see the music get some exposure. One thing though is the lack of artists taking it to another level with the exception of the group Spank Rock. However, there are two artists that are showing some innovation and evolution of the sound. DJ Blaqstarr and Karizma (both from Baltimore, obviously) are two such artists .

DJ Blaqstarr
Blaqstarr
DJ Blaqstarr is the newest artist to Diplo’s label Mad Decent. He released his Supastarr EP about a couple of months ago. The album keep certain elements of Club music but takes it a little more leftfield. It is a pretty raw release. I can see a whole lot of potential to what he is doing which could definitely establish him as a premier producer.

Karizma

Karizma is the next artist. He is one of the originators of Baltimore Club. He has been DJing since he was 13. He also been a DJ on Baltimore Radio station V103. He has done remixes of Roy Ayers, Lenny Kravitz among others. He even worked on the drum programming for Mary J Blige track Beautiful with hs partner DJ Spen. Even Gilles Peterson showed him some love on his Worldwide Awards Show. He just dropped amazing release on R2 records called ‘A Mind of Its Own’
