It is going to get a little Tricky in here
May 28, 2008 | 1 Comment

Trip Hop icon Tricky is back. I first heard him with the Wild Bunch aka Massive Attack, and then he put out Maxinquaye which was an amazing album. He has had other releases, but none can compare to Maxinquaye. Pre-Millennium Tension was also good record. He has a new album coming out entitled Knowle West Boy. It will drop July 9th in the UK and in September in the states.
Knowle West Boy is the album that sums up everything that Trickyhas accomplished since his 1995 Maxinquaye debut. From the sardonic bar-room blues of Puppy Toy to the haunting quasi-classicism of Joseph; from the twisted Specials-worshipping punk ofCouncil Estate to the bereft torchery of Past Mistake; from the Roxy Music’s The Bogus Man-at-the-dancehall art-stomp of Bacative to the poignant autobiographical tale of teen pregnancy that is School Gates, Knowle West Boy sees our misunderstood hero reaching into the post-punk, Two-Tone, reggae, hip hop and pure pop he grew up adoring, twisting it all into surreal Tricky shapes using his astonishingly accomplished band and a host of great undiscovered singers, and ending up with the most varied and accessible set of his career.
You can check out some of the tracks over at the website. There is a cool South Rakkas remix as well. After listening to them, Tricky is back. There is also a remix competition for all you producers and djs.

Well Wale is having a busy week, having just dropped the video for W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. and his new “Mixtape About Nothing” is dropping this week. This new track “Eye of the Tiger” produced by Best Kept Secret has just leaked on the internets. I am really curious what Mark Ronson and Wale are going to do for the full length album.

I love turntables because you can actually touch the “music”. However, this cat by the name of Scott Hobbs took the concept of “touching music” one step further by creating this prototype digital turntables called Attigo TT. He created this for his thesis. Damn. He basically has two touch screens about the size of a turntable, and he uses the song’s waveform as the “wax”. Then with his hands he can mantiulated just like you would with a regular record. It looks like he is using the Mac Operating system for the platform. Check out these videos for a demostration. You can see other videos here. (via engadget)

Meeting Kissey
May 27, 2008 | 2 Comments
It has been a few weeks, but I finally met Kissey Asplund (a rhythm lab favorite) all the way from Malmo, Sweden. Her show at the Funky Buddha Lounge was amazing. She is a great live performer. I see big things for her in the future. Because of this, I have a hate love relationship with Myspace. If it wasn’t for Myspace, I would have never had opportunity to hear her music and play it on our show. In the same way, Kissey met most of her producers through Myspace as well. It is an amazing tool. On the other hand, there is so much crap on their as well (bad design, spam, etc.).
The conversation we had was amazing. We talked about music, producers, her travels in the state, and her home country of Sweden. It is really true, the world is getting smaller.
Anyway it is nice to see her live and the fact that she is putting music out now on various labels makes me so happy. Speaking of which, her song “Atomic Light & Sound” produced by Rustie. is on a compilation on Mahasa Music. You can actually grab the track for free.

Santogold Interview with Hot 97’s DJ Enuff
May 11, 2008 | 2 Comments
I can’t believe that anyone from Hot 97 in NYC would be down with Santogold, but apparently DJ Enuff is. Now if they can get her in their playlist. Then I know that hell is frozen over. Check it, Santogold’s favorite MC is Lil Wayne. Think about that collaboration: Santogold & Lil Wayne. That would be some sick sh!t. What do you think?
