The New National Anthem
September 30, 2007 | Leave a Comment

Lupe Fiasco’s new song ‘Dumb It Down’, says it all. Media which includes Viacom(BET, MTV, VH1), CNN, Fox, NBC, and other corporate demons have created a society that can’t think anymore, can’t innovate, can’t be original. This is a country of consumers and nothing else. Well that is what I got from this video anyway.
Big Pimpin’ (in Japan)

Soil and Pimp Sessions are one of the coolest groups coming out of Japan right now. There music is this high spirited “Punk Jazz”. Think of them as a Punk band playing Jazz, or think what the Sex Pistols would sound like if they played trumpets, pianos, and saxophones. Not to mention, they have great fashion sense. These guys over at on-point.be hit us up to an interview they did with Soil & Pimp Sessions. Plus check out the other great stuff over at on-point.be. They got some really great content.
Soil and Pimp Sessions has a new album entitled ‘Pimpoint’ out now on Brownswood Recordings.

Music Industry Needs to Take Wale 101
September 19, 2007 | 12 Comments

This post was originally going to be about the new single from Wale, “Nike Boots”. I will post it at the end. I been observing the anomaly that is Wale or better yet the marketing behind him. Wale is a marketing genius. Without any major label support, he has been able to create such huge buzz, that within a year he has appeared on MTV VMAs, become a prodigy of Mark Ronson, written up in the latest Rolling Stone Magazine, and basically got music blog world on lock.
So what can the slow, and incompetent music industry can learn from this?
One. Have a passion and a belief in what you are making. Major labels don’t take the time to put the real effort in backing releases that they release. It takes groundwork. They hope ringtones, and paid apperances on MTV will help an artist.
Two. Take some damn chances for once. Wale has done this from incorporating the live sound of GO-GO, to working only with local producers instead of getting the big names to sell a record. You know what, it is paying off. Major Labels very rarely take chances on artists that are not easy to market (i.e J*Davey) or to sell a record, they just get a hot producer to produce the track and look instant hit.
Three. If you truly in believe in your music (and its good), give it away for free. The rest will fall into place. Wale released his mixtape 100 Miles and Running for a free download, and it spread like wildfire. On the other hand, the industry went after DJ Drama for distributing mixtapes which help promote artists. You know what? I like shooting myself in my foot too.
Four. What the hell. Why bother? Before the industry even enrolls in Wale 101, they have already flunked. I am going to take a page from Donald Rumsfeld playbook. The major labels and RIAA are part of the old music industry which is irrelevant and tired. We are just waiting for someone to pull the life support.
Oh yeah, that ringle idea that you came up with brilliant. I am going to shell out $7.00 for a cd with a single and a ringtone. Damn. Your marketing department must be filled with Havard graduates (on crack). If this is what you can do to help save the industry, just stick to suing little kids for illegal downloading (your good at it).
Without further due, here is the latest Wale track, ‘Nike Boots’

A Little Trivia: How many of you know that there is city in this country that does not have voting representation in congress or senate? We are trying to provide democracy in another country, but can’t give it to our own citizens. Find out more here.
Film: Super Noble Brothers
September 18, 2007 | Leave a Comment

This film provides a colorful look at Milwaukee’s own Super Noble Brothers—Andy, Tommy and Davey—who are artists, small business owners and world-renowned DJs of rare funk and soul.
In our ‘Don’t Sleep On Milwaukee Post’, we mentioned several Milwaukee artists to check out. One of those artists are the Super Noble Brothers. Soul and Funk Purveyors, record store and label owners, musicians, artists, and amazing DJs, the Super Noble Brothers are creative force in Milwaukee. Now their life story is now on film and will be premiering at the Milwaukee International Film Festival.
Milwaukee’s Lotus Land Records, Center Street’s trove of rare vinyl, has been on the lists of serious soul, funk, hip-hop and jazz collectors throughout the United States for years. Milwaukeean Mark Escribano’s camera hangs out with the brothers who own Lotus Land as they struggle to run this Milwaukee landmark, perform incredible live acts, discuss all matter of miscellanea and paint (particularly Davey, master painter of erotic abstracts). The brothers are a staple of the counterculture scene throughout Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood; however, their national and global influence is relatively unknown, ultimately reinforcing their humble attitudes. Intimately filmed at a swift pace, The Super Noble Brothers succeeds as an illuminating portrait of Milwaukee artists and businessmen, but perhaps more importantly as a testament to finding your own way in business and life.
These brothers probably own one of the finest record stores that specialize in funk, soul, and rare grooves in the country. Lotusland Records is not only an amazing store, but they also put out some great re-issues. Even DJ Shadow is known to shop for his 45s here. If you are in Milwaukee, don’t miss this film. The film will be showing on September 28th @ 6pm at the Milwaukee Art Museum, and then again on Sunday, September 30th @ 2:15pm at the Oriental.
