336459964_lDiplo and his Mad Decent Army are planning a takeover in 2007. His first artist, Bonde Do Role signed to Domino Records (same label for the ever popular Arcade Fire) and will have a full length release sometime this spring/summer. Signed DJ Blaqstarr who now has an EP out. He is working with the South Rakkas Crew out of Florida, and Buraka Som Sistema did a remix for Bonde Do Role’s Gasolina track. His ever popular Hollertronix 12″s keep continuing. Not to mention he has a documentary on Baile Funk called Favela on Blast set to be released this year. Plus he had time to help with production on the New MIA album along with Switch. And somewhere in there he is working on his own material. Don’t forget his educational Podcast too.
Diplo Your Head

The Rhythm Lab was fortunate to sit down and talk to Diplo and Bonde Do Role when the came to the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis last July. This was the first time I did an interview on a tour bus (you can definitely tell). Diplo’s Myspace Page | Mad Decent Myspace Page

J*Davey gets Big

One of our favorite groups, J*Davey has made a major label deal with Warner Bros. We knew they were shopping when The Rhythm Lab open up for them a back in October along with Black Blondie and Muja Messiah.
From Rap News Network:

Warner Bros. Records is pleased to announce that it has signed the uniquely hip talent, J*DaVeY to an exclusive recording contract. After several opening gigs for Prince, J*DaVeY, the Los Angeles-based duo (Miss Jack Davey and Brook D’Leau) have returned to the studio to gear up for the eagerly awaited album, title TBD, slated for a 2007 release.

“It’s simple, we are a post hip-hop electronic new wave funk punk jazz band,” says Brook. Adding Jack, “And we’re glad that Warner Bros. Records had the vision and guts to follow through on two quirky kids who make unconventional pop hits.”

Combining Hip-Hop, Soul, and New Wave, Jack and D’Leau break typical music barriers by transforming themselves into Electro-Soul carriers of futuristic “Funk-Punk” sounds. Similar to their non-conformist influences, the “urban Eurythmics” believe that music takes on many forms, and there are no limitations of expression — to create one’s identity means drawing outside the lines.

“We are so proud and excited to be working with such a unique and talented artist. There is nothing on the WBR roster or for that matter on the planet that sounds like J*DaVeY,” says VP of A&R, Craig Aaronson. Adds fellow A&R representative, Tick, “When we saw J*DaVeY live we knew it was special. The group crosses all genres and knows no boundaries. From their influences to their material, a guy named Brook and a girl named Jack would start a party we all haven’t been to in a long time.”

And to their success, J*DaVeY’s music has been licensed for episodes on the popular television drama “CSI: New York,” Snoop Dogg’s latest film “Bossin’ Up,” and the HBO series, “Entourage.” Their demo songs, which were first leaked in cyber-space, are being played on radio stations in The States, as well as overseas by way of popular and award-winning radio personalities Gilles Peterson, Benji B, and Berry King.

Step Aside B-more, It is Chocolate City’s Turn

Don’t get me wrong. I got love for B-more, but it is about time that Chocolate City gets into the limelight. I live there for six years and I am alumni of Howard, and most of my peeps still live there. With Wale bringing that Go-Go sound to the masses, this might help get bands such as Northeast Groovers, Rare Essence and others some well deserved exposure. I only hope that DJs don’t start doing cheesy, low quality go-go remixes and mashups like they have done with some Club Music.
I want to thank the guys over at The Couch Sessions and The Fader for pointing out the cat Wale.

Fabric Live 33: Spank Rock

The guys better known as Spank Rock are now part of the legacy known as Fabric. They are in good company with artists such as their labelmate Diplo, Carl Craig, Grooverider, and Bugz in the Attic to name a few.

When preparing their Fabriclive CD, the boys were fully prepared for
their mix to be compared to the one from their label mate Diplo, coming
from the same east coast and often helplessly grouped into the same
category (mashup, party-style DJing etc)…so to battle the comparison,
they deliberately altered the mix. And the result is Fabriclive 33, a
statement-making mix bursting with personality. From the dialogues in
the intro and outro (which Alex secretly recorded before their
performance on the Jimmy Kimmel show) to their secret sound effects to
their debauched singing to just the quick draw, short attention span
levelling of genres, if this mix asks a question, the answer is
downright hilarious. Tricks are for kids and don’t you forget it.

We are definetly looking forward to next release which will be released on Domino records. Check out the interview we did with Spank Rock on one of our older shows here.

Nina Simone movie in the works and to star Mary J. Blige

March 22, 2007 | Leave a Comment

A film about Nina Simone starring Mary J. Blige is supposedly in the works.

The film, an MTV Films/ Paramount Pictures project, will among things take a look at Dr. Nina Simone’s relationship with her manager Clifton Henderson - who met her in Los Angeles in 1996 and was invited by her to move to France. Dr. Simone’s career took off during the 1960s, and the she was renowned for her powerful jazz ballads and protest songs, including “Mississippi Goddam” and “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black” - the song “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black” served as an anthem for the civil rights movement. Dr. Simone lived the later part of her life in France. She died in Carry Le Rouet on April 21st, 2003.
The film will star Mary J Blige as Nina Simone and will be produced by Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine along with Lauren Lloyd, Gene Kirkwood and Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg. A director has not been named, but the screenplay is to be written by television writer Cynthia Mort (”Will & Grace,” “Roseanne”).
